1. India Crowned Overall Champions of South Asian Games 2016

India finishes on top with 308 medals including 188 gold, 90 silvers, 30 bronze medals.
Sri Lanka, placed second in the table featuring eight SAARC countries, came nowhere close to India in the medals tally list. The Lankans bagged a total of 186 medals (25 golds, 63 silvers and 98 bronze medals).

The 2016 South Asian Games, officially the XII South Asian Games, is a major multi-sport event which took place from 5 February to 16 February 2016 in Guwahati and Shillong, India.

2. Alok Kumar Verma to be the next Delhi Police chief

Senior IPS officer Alok Kumar Verma will be the next Commissioner of Delhi Police, succeeding incumbent B S Bassi, who will retire on February 29.
A 1979-batch Union Territory cadre officer, 58-year-old Verma is currently serving as DG of Tihar prison and will serve as the top police officer of the national capital for 17 months.
Sources said the government has cleared the name of Verma as the next Commissioner of Delhi Police and a formal order is expected soon.
Verma will take charge at a time when the Delhi Police is facing severe criticism for handling the JNU row, arising out of the arrest of the university students' union president Kanhaiya Kumar for allegedly raising anti-national slogans at an event commemorating death of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.
Bassi has also received flak for allegedly going slow in taking action against those who indulged in violence in Patiala House court today and on Monday.
3. Govt cuts interest rate on small post office schemes by 0.25%

Government has cut interest rates by 0.25 per cent on short-term post office deposits, Kisan Vikas Patras and other small saving schemes below five years of maturity.
However, it left social security schemes such as Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, the Senior Citizen Savings Scheme, long term Monthly Income Scheme and PPF untouched.
The decision was taken to align interest on small savings with market rates and help the economy move to a lower overall interest rate regime eventually.
Post office savings of 1, 2 and 3 year term deposits, Kisan Vikas Patra as well as 5-year Recurring Deposits till now earned 0.25 per cent higher interest than the government securities of similar tenures.
Finance Ministry in a statement said this advantage will be withdrawn from 1st of April this year and now the rates would be revised every quarter.
4. Renowned Malayalam writer Kakkattil passes away

Noted Malayalam novelist and short story writer Akbar Kakkattil passed away at a private hospital. He was 62 and is survived by wife and two children.
Kakkattil was undergoing treatment for a lung-related ailment for a year and the end came early this morning.
He has 54 books to his credit which includes, four novels, 27 short stories, six collections of essays, seven novelettes, a play, among others.
A two-time winner of the prestigious Kerala Sahitiya Akademi award, he was also recipient of the first-ever award in humour section in 1992 for his 'School Diary'— an anthology of short essays and in the year 2004 his 'Vadakkuninnoru Kudumba Vrithantham' was awarded as the best novel.
He was the Vice-President of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi and Member of Malayalam Advisory Panel of National Book Trust and Malayalam Advisory Board of Kerala Government.
5. Karnataka Bank bags award

Karnataka Bank Ltd has bagged 'IBA Banking Technology Award' in the category of 'Best Risk and Fraud Management Initiative - Runner Up' amongst small banks.
The award was announced as part of Indian Banks' Association (IBA) Technology Conference, Expo and Awards 2016.
6. World's cheapest smartphone Freedom251

The world's cheapest smartphone, Freedom251, has hit the Indian market at an unheard of price - Rs 251 or below $4 - making the Android-operated device attractive, although some handset industry experts and analysts were sceptical and even called it a gimmick.
Noida-based Ringing Bells, set up last year, launched the ultra-affordable 3G smartphone hoping to catalyse sales and help bring millions of Indians online in the world's second-largest market, after China.
Indian handset makers and telecom analysts said just being cheap won't get them far and that a 3G smartphone with specifications offered in the Freedom251 would cost a minimum Rs 2,000 or $30.
"We're looking to corner a 40% market share in 12 months from now," Ringing Bells Pvt. president Ashok Chadha told ET. "The vision is not to be making any avaricious margins, but to make them reasonable so we sustain ourselves and give back to the customer the true value."
7. Indian Railways won 36th National Chess Team Championship

Indian Railways won the 36th National Chess team Championship in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. For the Indian Railways team it was the first ever title.
To win the championship the team defeated Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) team in the final.
8. Manish Arora conferred Knight of the Legion of Honour, France's highest honour

Fashion designer Manish Arora was awarded with the Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur (Knight of the Legion of Honour), France's highest civilian honour.
French Ambassador Francois Richier presented the award to Arora for his renowned and critically-acclaimed contribution to the fashion world.
Manish Arora is an Indian fashion designer based in New Delhi.
9. West Bengal government launched Utkarsh Bangla Scheme for school-dropouts

West Bengal government launched Utkarsh Bangla Scheme, a welfare scheme for school-dropouts, in Kolkata.
Utkarsha Bangla is aimed at giving vocational training to school dropouts. Each youth will get training ranging from 400 to 1200 hours.
The school-dropouts will be trained free of charge in tailoring, driving, repairing television and other electronic equipment and beauty courses etc.
